Special Olympics Athlete

To be eligible to participate in Special Olympics as an athlete, individuals must be at least 8 years old and identified by an agency or professional as having one of the following conditions: intellectual disabilities, cognitive delays as measured by formal assessment, or significant learning or vocational problems due to cognitive delay that requires or have required specially designed instruction.

A person never ages out of Special Olympics.
The Salt Lake Stars’ athletes are primarily children, teens, and adults in their 20’s but everyone is welcome!

How to Join

To become a Salt Lake Stars athlete, you must complete the required Special Olympics Utah (SOUT) registration process.

Step 1: Complete Athlete Paperwork

  • New Athletes
Complete the Athlete Registration Form if you are new to Special Olympics Utah (SOUT). This paperwork is only required once and no medical visit is required.
    • If you are transferring to the Salt Lake Stars from another SOUT team, you do not need to complete a new Athlete Registration Form.
    • If your athlete participates in a school-based Unified Champion Schools® sports program, they do need to complete the Athlete Registration Form to participate with the Salt Lake Stars.
  • Returning Athletes
After the Athlete Registration Form expires (one year), returning athletes will complete the Athlete Renewal Form. This paperwork is is required annually and ensures the most current information is on file.

Step 2: Submit Your Forms
The Salt Lake Stars will no longer accept paper copies of paperwork. All registration forms must be submitted digitally, either as a scanned document or a clear photo.  Upon submission, please keep a copy on file for yourself.

  • Print and complete the form, then scan it or take a clear photo. (This is not an online form)
  • Email a copy to metroarea@sout.org and cc: amyhwilde@gmail.com

Step 3: Register for a Salt Lake Stars sports season

  • Completing your SOUT registration forms does not automatically register you for a Salt Lake Stars sports team. The Salt Lake Stars has a separate registration period for each sport.
  • Check the calendar to see the current schedule, available sports, and season dates.
  • When registration opens, complete the sport-specific registration form to reserve your athlete’s spot.

Unified Partner

The Unified Sports program was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding. In Unified Sports, teams are made up of people of similar age and/or ability. Partners play an invaluable role in the lives of our athletes. Unified Partners are ages 8 and older.

Complete the Unified Partner Paperwork (expires every three years)

Special Olympics Unified Partners are required to complete the Unified Partner Registration Form, Concussion Policy Form, and Background Check Request Form (if over 18).

    Coach

When you volunteer to coach for the Stars, you are signing up for a uniquely rewarding experience. Our coaches are parents, siblings, and friends who are committed to helping our teammates discover their strengths and abilities. Coaches must be 16 years or older. Prior experience with a sport is beneficial, but not required.

Complete the Coaches paperwork (expires every three years)

Special Olympics Coaches are required to complete the Volunteer/Unified Partner Registration Form and Background Screening Request Form (if over 18). All coaches must obtain a Green Level (Class A) Volunteer status and complete the necessary training.
